Complex weak values in quantum measurement

چکیده

In the weak measurement formalism of Y. Aharonov et al. the so-called weak value Aw of any observable A is generally a complex number. We derive a physical interpretation of its value in terms of the shift in the measurement pointer’s mean position and mean momentum. In particular we show that the mean position shift contains a term jointly proportional to the imaginary part of the weak value and the rate at which the pointer is spreading in space as it enters the measurement interaction. Weak Force Measurement in Bistable Optomechanical System

One of the main milestones in the study of opto-mechanical system is to increase the sensitivity of weak forces measurement up to the standard quantum limit. We have studied the detection of weak force under a bistable condition in red detuned regime. In this case, dynamics of the system behaves asymptotically similar to stationary state and applying external force affects phase and fluctuation...

Emergence of Weak Values

Various quantum measurement procedures are analyzed and it is shown that under certain conditions they yield consistently weak values which might be very different from the eigenvalues, the allowed outcomes according to the standard quantum formalism. The weak value outcomes result from peculiar quantum interference of the pointer variable of the measuring device.

Weak values under uncertain conditions

We analyze the average of weak values over statistical ensembles of pre and post-selected states. The protocol of weak values, proposed by Aharonov et al. [3], is the result of a weak measurement conditional on the outcome of a subsequent strong (projective) measurement. Weak values can be beyond the range of eigenvalues of the measured observable and, in general, can be complex numbers. We sho...

The analogy between optical beam shifts and quantum weak measurements

We describe how the notion of optical beam shifts (including the spatial and angular Goos–Hänchen shift and Imbert–Federov shift) can be understood as a classical analogue of a quantum measurement of the polarization state of a paraxial beam by its transverse amplitude distribution. Under this scheme, complex quantum weak values are interpreted as spatial and angular shifts of polarized scalar ...

Quantum weak values are not unique What do they actually measure ?

Precise definitions of “weak [quantum] measurements” and “weak value” [of a quantum observable] are offered, which seem to capture the meaning of the often vague ways that these terms are used in the literature. Simple finite dimensional examples are given showing that weak values of an observable are not unique, and in fact arbitrary weak values can be obtained by appropriate weak measurements...
